Updating my laptop's Nvidia drivers Print E-mail

nvidia-logo-2.jpgI've got a Sony VAIO laptop, and -- apparently as well as most other brands -- Sony is rather reluctant in releasing video driver updates. My official Sony support page indicates that the latest driver for my specific model dates of June 11, 2007. That's about a year old as of the time of writing.

Now we all know that video drivers evolve really fast, but when you visit the Nvidia downloads section, you'll notice that there are no driver downloads for mobile video cards, as these are specifically released through the laptop-maker's own channels (I guess they rebrand the generic video driver a little, and sometimes change smaller stuff to make it work on the hardware?).

Anyways, Nvidia releases a common driver package that functions on all (most) of its chipsets, so I'd really like to upgrade to a recent version and get rid of some annoying glitches in older games (Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, ...). But the common driver package doesn't recognize my GeForce Go 7600 as a supported card.

Until I found out about http://www.laptopvideo2go.com, a site that provides modified .INF files that go with the latest Nvidia releases, and introduce the mobile Nvidia series to the common driver package.
In short: download the most recent driver from their forums, overwrite the provided .INF file with the modded one, and perform a manual driver update. All info in this sticky on the laptopvideo2go site and most recent 17x. series drivers here.

Worked flawlessly for me :-)
